USA – Day 14 – Pittsburgh

Took some time out today to do very little – a rest day.  Corrie had to go in to work for half a day. She got back in the afternoon and we went to a shopping centre/mall to see what was good. I realised we don’t have every brand in SA, but we do have a good variety and selection of goods. The exchange rate had been declining rapidly while I was in the US, didn’t make sense to do shopping there if there was not anything I needed urgently. We met Jas in the afternoon for dinner at the…

USA – Day 13 – Pittsburgh

Woke up early. My room is very bright in the morning with side windows facing east. In the afternoon we ventured to Braddock to go to a photography fair. The tunnel was closed, there was a lot of traffic because of the detour. Took us ages to get there. When we did arrive we found that the fair was in a building which should have been abandoned, and across from a factory that was spewing out sulphur smelling fumes. We didn’t stay long. I drove us back home. Cooked a fusion prawn/shrimp curry while Corrie cut the grass.  I also…

USA – Day 12 – Pittsburgh

Had a lazyish morning. We only left the house at about midday. Blessed with a hot sunny day, the temperature peaked at 31 degrees celsius. Stopped at a local farmers market before heading into the city. Our first stop was the Strip district, which was bustling with interesting clothing stores, food stalls, cafes. Had my first home-made lemonade which was deliciously refreshing on this very hot day. Next we thought it a good idea to check out the Outdoor festival, which turned out to be a lot of stalls promoting a lot of outdoor activities in the area from cycling,…

USA – Day 11 – Pittsburgh PA

Woke up early to get ready to leave for the airport.  The metrocab taxi that I booked online the previous day arrived at 8:05am. It took about 25min and cost $35 to the airport. I had checked in the previous day and already paid for my luggage, so check in and security went quite quickly. Had 2 hours still before the flight. Had some hot oats for breakfast and skyped Carol for a bit. I love that there is free wi-fi in most places. Everyone I have spoken to didn’t have good things to say about US Airways. The flight…

USA – Day 10 – Boston / Gloucester

Chris invited us to go on a day trip with them to Gloucester. He hired a zipcar and picked us up from Alliz’s apartment. We headed out to Gloucester which is only an hours drive from Boston. Perfect day for it, beautiful weather.  We stopped at a beach first just outside the town, Alliz had a swim. Explored Gloucester town a little bit, had lunch at Captain Carlows. Ordered a platter of seafood – scallops, prawns/shrimp, calamri rings, calamari heads, cod fish, oysters Also order a lobster lazyman’s bake which was way to rich for me – soaked in butter.…

USA – Day 9 – Boston

I think the days in New York and the walking caught up to me this day. The weather wasn’t great either, and I didn’t feel like going out much. I walked a few hundred meters to a bus stop and waited about 45min for the 66 bus to Harvard square. I really don’t know why I waited so long, I think you reach a point where you’ve waited this long, if you leave now, you may just miss it (there was no information about the times that the bus came by). I decided to just walk to the next stop,…

USA – Day 8 – Boston

It was a rushed morning. Des has a lot to do before she leaves for work – make sure Livvy gets out of bed and ready for school, make her mom breakfast and get her dressed, let the dogs out, feed them, prepare lunch for herself and get ready for her day at work. We left the house at about 7:40am to get to Springfield to catch my 8:15 bus. I made it onto the bus with a couple of minutes to spare! Cut it very close. The bus to Boston was uneventful. It arrived at South Station on time.…
